13-year-old girl arrested for threat that led to closure of Ansonia schools

ANSONIA, CT (WFSB) – A 13-year-old girl was arrested for posting a threat online that led to the closure of Ansonia Public Schools.

Police announced the arrest on Thursday afternoon.

The teenager confessed, it was said. She was charged with first-degree threats and second-degree breach of the peace.

“There will be an increased police presence around all schools in Ansonia,” police posted on social media.

Police said they began their investigation at around 6:40 a.m. on Thursday.

“Due to unspecified threats on social media, Ansonia Public Schools will be closed (Thursday) in coordination with the Ansonia Police Department,” the district said. “The Ansonia Police Department and Ansonia Public Schools are currently investigating and schools will be closed (Thursday) out of an abundance of caution.”

A parent told Channel 3 that the children learned the school was closed around 7 a.m. while waiting for their buses.

He also said that it was a shame that everyone had to deal with it.

“People almost become desensitized,” said Daniel Bosques, a parent from Ansonia. “So you’re a little scared, but you’re glad that the school, the school system, the principal Dr. (Joseph) DiBacco and everyone else involved in protecting the children are responding so quickly. The Ansonia Police Department has the situation under control.”

All extracurricular activities were also cancelled.

However, the Ansonia High School football game, which was scheduled to take place at Seymour High School, went ahead anyway.

School operations were scheduled to resume on Friday.

“Please talk to your children about how to communicate appropriately (e.g., via email, social media),” police and DiBacco said in a statement. “Please be assured that any threats to our schools or students are taken very seriously and thoroughly investigated.”

Since school started late last month, school districts across Connecticut have been hit by online threats both inside and outside the state.
