A large aquarium weighing 33.5 tons has burst in a shopping mall in Shanghai, China, injuring 15 people.

Passers-by were injured when the glass front of the seven-meter-long and three-meter-high aquarium, which housed numerous sharks, shattered.

Eight of the injured were believed to be customers, the rest were sales staff and security personnel. Most were injured by shards of thick safety glass.

The aquarium was only built about two years ago and is an attraction for visitors who flock to watch the divers feed the sharks.

Unfortunately, three lemon sharks and dozens of smaller fish and turtles were killed in the incident. The entrance to Dongfang Shopping Center was flooded and covered with broken glass.

Local police said the cause of the accident is currently being investigated.
