JOHNSON COUNTY – A Kansas teenager is guilty of robbing a gun store that left another teenager dead.

On August 2, a jury convicted 19-year-old Deon Eugene Austin of first-degree murder, aggravated assault and aggravated battery in connection with the death of 16-year-old Jammal Blacknoll Jr., who died of gunshot wounds, the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office said.

Shortly before 9 p.m. on April 10, 2022, Mission, Kansas police were called to a shooting in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 5100 block of Foxridge Drive, court records show.

Emergency responders found Jammaal Blacknoll Jr. with multiple gunshot wounds and pronounced him dead at the scene. Austin also suffered a gunshot wound to his left leg. He was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital for further treatment.

Investigators said a bag of marijuana and a handgun were found at the scene. A search of Austin and Blacknoll’s phones confirmed the two had met to purchase firearms. Witness testimony confirmed the incident was a gun sale gone wrong when Austin attempted to rob Blacknoll.

An autopsy confirmed that Blacknoll had been shot 11 times. Austin was 17 at the time of the shooting but was tried as an adult.

According to prosecutors, sentencing is scheduled for September 26 in Austin.
