19-year-old from Bend arrested for domestic violence and threat with a weapon; gas station employee and citizen detain him for the officers

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — A 19-year-old Bend man attacked a woman in a vehicle in a convenience store parking lot Thursday, threatened an acquaintance with a gun and fled from police. He then attacked gas station employees, who detained him along with a community member until police arrived, police said.

According to Sheila Miller, communications manager for Bend Police, officers responded to a reported gun attack in the Safeway parking lot on NE Third Street around 1:10 p.m.

The caller to 911 in Deschutes County reported that a man attacked a woman in a vehicle in the Safeway parking lot and then threatened the caller with a firearm.

Officers arrived about three minutes later and the suspect fled, Miller said.

During a brief foot chase, officers followed the man to the Arco gas station at the corner of Third Street and Greenwood Avenue, where he allegedly attacked gas station employees who attempted to prevent him from leaving the station. Miller said employees and a community member prevented the suspect from leaving the station until officers arrived and arrested him.

Miller said another community member alerted officers to a pile of the man’s belongings that he had tried to hide nearby. Police found a subcompact Glock 26 pistol, various drugs and packaging materials commonly used for sales.

The suspect has an Oregon State Juvenile Justice Department warrant out for his arrest for violating probation in connection with second-degree burglary, Miller said.

He was booked into the county jail on suspicion of fourth-degree assault (domestic violence), two counts of menacing and harassment, unlawful use and possession of a firearm, and a felony warrant. He was held without bail.

NewsChannel 21’s policy is not to release the names of arrested individuals until formal charges have been filed.
