Two Phoenix police officers were injured in a shooting just outside downtown on Tuesday evening.

The shooting occurred near 15th Street and McDowell Road on the evening of September 3rd around 6:30 p.m.

The condition of one officer is critical, that of another is stable.

“This is a terrible night for the Phoenix Police Department,” said Acting Phoenix Police Chief Michael Sullivan during a press conference around 9:45 p.m. “Tonight, two of our officers were shot while protecting this community.”

He says officers responded to a report of someone breaking into a car. When the two officers arrived, the suspect took off running and jumped a fence. Then, the police chief said, his officers ran after the suspect but were quickly met with gunfire.

He says the officer is in stable condition and his bulletproof vest helped protect him. The other officer is fighting for his life, he says.

Search for suspects underway

Police are searching for the suspects who fled the scene. Shortly before 9 p.m., Phoenix police announced that one person had been arrested.

On SkyFOX you can see a no-go zone being set up around several blocks while police comb the neighborhoods looking for those responsible.

A video was sent to FOX 10 showing armed police officers along with police dogs searching residential areas for suspects and ensuring the safety of residents.

Motorway roads affected

The SR 51 southbound exit ramp at McDowell Road was closed for the investigation. The ramp to SR 51 northbound at Mini-Stack was also closed.
