There were postponements in some playoff races in the American and national leagues last week.

The Kansas City Royals were one of last week’s biggest winners, gaining a lead in the AL wildcard race with a win over the Minnesota Twins.

The race for the NL wildcards is still full, but there is a new team in last place. The New York Mets are ahead of Atlanta in the tiebreaker going into Monday.

The three NL division races appear to be decided, but as of early Sunday night, all three AL division leaders had a lead of five games or less.

Expected playoff table

1. New York Yankees (first round bye)

2. Cleveland (bye in the first round)

No. 6 Minnesota vs. No. 3 Houston

No. 5 Kansas City vs. No. 4 Baltimore

1. Los Angeles Dodgers (first round bye)

2. Philadelphia (bye in the first round)

No. 6 New York Mets vs. No. 3 Milwaukee

No. 5 Arizona vs. No. 4 San Diego

1. New York Yankees (82-61)

5. Chicago White Sox (33-111)

5. Los Angeles Angels (59-84)

4. Detroit 3.5 games back

Kansas City edged Minnesota this weekend with a three-game win at Kauffman Stadium.

The Royals now have a 2.5-game lead over the Twins in the wild-card race. They also won the series finale against the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday.

The four-game winning streak allowed the Portuguese to make up some of the deficit lost during a seven-game losing streak that ended with Wednesday’s victory.

Kansas City will need to carry this momentum into its midweek series against the New York Yankees, who are engaged in their own battle with the Baltimore Orioles at the top of the AL East.

Baltimore has two wild-card exhibition games of its own this week against the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers, both of whom are attempting to make a late push for the third wild-card spot currently held by the Twins.

Minnesota, however, gets a breather in its schedule as it hosts the Los Angeles Angels and Cincinnati Reds this week. A winning week could be all the Twins need to fend off the Tigers and Red Sox.

Cleveland has the easiest week of the AL’s top teams with three road games against the Chicago White Sox and a home game against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Guardians could use the easy week to pull away from Kansas City and Minnesota.

The Houston Astros are comfortably 4.5 games ahead of the Seattle Mariners in the AL West despite their loss to the DBacks on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Houston Astros can extend their lead over the Seattle Mariners in the AL West to 5.5 games with a win against Arizona on Sunday night.

1. Los Angeles Dodgers (86-57)

The Mets and Braves will most likely fight for the last NL wildcard spot.

The NL East rivals finished the weekend tied 78-65 and now face a key three-game series from September 24-26.

New York travels this week to face the Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies.

The weekend series in Philadelphia could be a challenge for the Mets, as the Phillies are still fighting for first place in the NL.

Atlanta faces a challenge of its own this weekend, with four home games against the Los Angeles Dodgers, which could play a big role in deciding home-field advantage and the final wild-card spot.

With Sunday night’s win over the Astros, Arizona regained its lead over the Mets to 1.5 games.

The DBacks have seven games over the next two weeks against the Milwaukee Brewers that will determine where they land in the wild-card battle. This could be a chance for the Mets and Braves to both make the playoffs.
