On Wednesday, the Sunshine Division hosted its 22nd annual “Shop with a Cop” back-to-school event.

Officials said 250 children participated, with a focus on children and families in need of school supplies.

The partnership is with the Portland Police Bureau and Fred Meyer.

Each child received a $150 Fred Meyer gift card to spend on school supplies, clothing and other items.

The gift cards are purchased with donations through the Sunshine Division Izzy’s Kids Program. Fred Meyer also donated money as well as clothing discounts, free school supplies and toiletries for each child.

According to officials, dozens of children and emergency workers went shopping together to prepare for the start of the new school year.

According to organizers, the event is about helping others and building relationships within the community.

“The amazing thing is that many of these children may have never had contact with the police before, or that contact may have been negative. This special experience of face-to-face contact, in a thoroughly positive environment, where the children are prepared for their return to school in a warm and safe environment, I think is wonderful for the children, but I also think it is wonderful for the police officers involved,” said one of the organizers.
