36 flights cancelled, 201 delayed at Japan’s international airport due to missing scissors

A missing pair of scissors caused considerable disruption at New Chitose Airport on Hokkaido in Japan over the weekend. 36 flights had to be cancelled and 201 others were delayed.

Security checks at the domestic terminal were suspended for about two hours on Saturday morning while authorities searched for the missing pairs of scissors that had disappeared from a shop near the boarding gates. The suspension of checks left hundreds of travelers temporarily stranded, the BBC reported.

Despite the scissors’ absence on Saturday, security checks and flight operations eventually resumed. The next day, the scissors were found by an employee at the same store. Hokkaido Airport, the operator of New Chitose Airport, confirmed the find on Monday after verifying that the scissors were the missing scissors.

The incident affected many travelers returning home after Japan’s annual Bon festival. “I think we have no choice but to wait,” one traveler told local media, the BBC reported. “But I hope they’ll be a little more cautious.” Another traveler expressed concern, saying, “There are so many things to worry about these days… it never ends. And I don’t feel safe until I’m back home.”

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has asked Hokkaido Airport to investigate the cause of the incident and take measures to prevent a recurrence.

“We are aware that this is due to inadequate storage and management systems in the store,” Hokkaido Airport said, according to the BBC. “We are aware that this is also an incident that could be linked to an aircraft hijacking or terrorism and will again work to ensure a full management investigation.”

New Chitose Airport is one of Japan’s busiest airports, handling more than 15 million travelers in 2022. According to aviation analytics firm OAG, it is also home to the world’s second-busiest domestic flight route, connecting Tokyo and Sapporo.
