4 of the best Baltimore Chicken boxes

4 of the best Baltimore Chicken boxes

What do you get when you order your favorite chicken box?

I’ll go for the classic: four wings fried “hard” (extra crispy) and western fries with salt, pepper, ketchup and hot sauce. For most Baltimoreans, this order can be pronounced in one word (like Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious).

The Baltimore chicken box dates back to at least the 1930s, when it appeared in ads in the local newspaper, including a $1 box with two whole fried chickens and a loaf of bread, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Here are some of the best places in town to try something different in the chicken box or just keep things traditional.

Connie’s Chicken and Waffles is a black family-owned business known for its sweet selection of waffles and savory shrimp.

Connie’s offers two- and three-piece chicken boxes with seasoned fries, as well as six-piece bone-in wings in flavors like mango habanero and garlic parmesan.

So if you’re not a tendering type, you can still get your money’s worth!

In the back of what appears to be a regular corner shop in St. Paul, The Spot is a disguised diner with a New York bodega atmosphere. The chicken box comes in either four or six portions with fries.

The Spot also offers a list of flavors for its boneless and jumbo party wings, ranging from classics like Honey Lemon Pepper and Mumbo to Atomic Hot and Thai Chili.

At R. House and in Federal Hill, the Chicken Box is a little different, with crispy breast fillets, sandwiches, chicken wings and “old-school hospitality.”

BRD could become the new chicken box of choice for tender chicken lovers with its BRD Box Tender meal, which includes spicy or mild crispy chicken tenders, seasoned fries, garlic bread and pickles.

They also offer bone-in wings by the pound for any chicken box purists who want to put together their own BRD box.

BRD experiments with different sauces like their spicy White Barbeque or the spicy honey Old Bay sauce for dipping (they also have the classic ketchup and hot sauce).

Locations: R. House and 1104 S. Charles St.

Hip Hop is best known for its “crack” seasoning and has been a popular destination for chicken boxes for years.

With more than three locations in the city and several in surrounding counties, Hip Hop’s Six Wing Combo is served classically with three wings, three drumsticks, fries, coleslaw and a slice of bread.

Hip Hop also offers chicken tenders, catfish, or a chicken and fish combo with fries, so you still get the chicken box experience.

Locations: 901 N. Caroline St. and 848 N. Eutaw St.

Prices: (6 pieces) $11.99; (10 pieces) $16.36
