49ers extend lead to 16:7 before halftime

The 49ers were without running back Christian McCaffrey on Monday night against the Jets, but were still able to go into halftime with a lead at Levi’s Stadium.

Deebo Samuel ran for a touchdown and Jake Moody kicked three field goals to give them a 16-7 lead after 30 minutes of play. Moody’s final kick came in the final seconds of the second quarter, two plays after wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk failed to catch a Brock Purdy pass in the end zone.

McCaffrey was unexpectedly left off the roster due to calf and Achilles injuries that landed him on the injured list, but Jordan Mason has done a good job in his place. Mason has rushed 11 times for 74 yards and Purdy has completed 9 of 16 carries for 106 yards.

Aaron Rodgers and Garrett Wilson scored four times as the Jets picked up five first downs on a 70-yard touchdown drive in the first quarter, but the Jets have not picked up any more first downs so far. They gained 13 yards outside of the touchdown drive and running back Breece Hall lost a fumble to set up the 49ers’ first field goal, so the offense hasn’t been very consistent.

Rodgers was sacked once by Leonard Floyd, but he didn’t appear to have any problems with the Achilles tendon he tore while sacking Floyd in last season’s opener.

The Jets had cornerback Sauce Gardner on the bench for a time before Moody’s final field goal and told ESPN it was not for medical reasons. Gardner was back on the field for the final incomplete passes before Moody’s kick.
