The fun of crafting is creating something for your home, something to give to a friend or loved one, or something to commemorate special times in your life, like filling a scrapbook with photos and souvenirs from a trip.

One of the benefits of crafting is that you can customize your creations to suit your taste or interior design. For example, think about painting the picture frames in your bedroom to match your light lavender walls.

And perhaps the biggest benefit of DIYing is that it saves money. You don’t have to spend $15 on a custom-colored picture frame when you can buy a plain frame and paint it yourself with a few squirts of your leftover gallon of wall paint.

Many of the craft supplies you need can be found at places like Walmart, but stop by your local Dollar Tree to check out the shelves before filling your cart at a big box store. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at what you can find at Dollar Tree for cheaper prices than Walmart. Here are five items to help you stock up on craft supplies.

yarn

You’re not knitting sweaters for the family, so you don’t need tons of yarn. Instead, you need just enough to cover your homemade rag doll with a bunch of red yarn for hair. Dollar Tree sells 132 yards of acrylic-polyester yarn for $1.25; Walmart’s skeins are twice as large, but also cost twice as much. Dollar Tree is your best bet if you only need a small amount.

Paint brush

Let’s go back to that picture frame for your lavender room. You’ve found an old wooden frame at home that you want to freshen up, and Dollar Tree has just the foam paint brushes you need. Grab a six-pack for $1.25. Walmart charges about a quarter more for a smaller quantity.

Wood and metal crafts

Kids love anything personalized, right? Set the tone for their bedroom by making a custom nameplate for the door. A vertical plywood sign about the size of a hotel “Do Not Disturb” sign hangs from a rope. Kids can use your leftover paint, brushes and colorful stickers to decorate their signs. It’s only $1.25 at Dollar Tree, which has tons of wood and metal signs and other decorative items.

Watercolor paper

Want to try watercolor painting? You don’t have to spend a fortune on watercolor paper if you’re still in the trial and error phase. Dollar Tree sells a pad of 24 8″ x 10″ sheets for $3. A similar pad that’s ideal for beginners costs over $1 more at Walmart.

Basic care

Hardcore crafters have tons of supplies in the drawers of their craft carts, and it’s a safe bet that they would have found many of these staples at Dollar Tree. What crafter doesn’t have a supply of glitter glue, resin and hardener, erasers, craft clips, decorative sand, cork boards, hot glue sticks and pads, and knitting needles? A $20 bill at Dollar Tree will last longer on supplies than it will at Walmart.
