Macroeconomic issues such as shifts in consumer spending have contributed to a lack of diners in the area’s food and beverage establishments. June 2024

MOHICAN REGENT – Capers (14726 Gratiot Avenue)known for its steak prices per ounce on the east side of the city, announced earlier this summer that it would be temporarily closed for construction.

July 2024

CENTER CITY – Detroit Institute of Bagels (4884 Grand River Avenue)the Core City bagel shop that was set to open its doors in 2023 after its Corktown closure has closed again. This time, according to BridgeDetroit, the closure is related to the departure of much of the workforce after the store was sold by its original owner Ben Newman to Detroit developer Philip Kafka.

ROYAL OAK – The Morrie (511 S Main Street, Royal Oak)this music-focused restaurant and bar has closed and will find new life as Blind Owl, an existing New Baltimore eatery, according to a press release. AFB Hospitality Group owner Aaron F. Belen opened Morrie in 2016, but is shifting his focus to real estate development and leasing the space to Blind Owl owner Nicolas Andreasson. The new spot will emphasize a fusion of Latin American cuisine and sushi and is slated to open sometime in September.

August 2024

DOWNTOWN – Hanah House (607 Shelby St. No. 100)an Asian fusion restaurant that opened in 2022 in the downtown financial district is reportedly permanently closed and is currently seeking investors to purchase the business. According to the FreepThe restaurant posted on social media that the venue is for sale, revealing few details other than a call for potential buyers to message the team for more information.

SAINT CLAIR SHORES – Jamex Brewing Co. (21721 Harper Avenue, Saint Clair Shores) will close at the end of August. Citing challenges in the service industry, owners Jeff and Kat Kaye announced the closure in a post on Facebook on Friday, August 9.
