It’s no surprise that living in Washington, DC is quite expensive, especially considering that DC’s cost of living was recently ranked among the highest cities in the world.

However, if you plan to build a life and raise a family in the Washington metropolitan area, it seems inevitable that many Washington residents will move to the surrounding area where buying a home is less expensive and they can escape the day-to-day expenses of the city.

Just last year, Silver Spring was ranked third in Fortune Magazine’s rankings – this year the city jumped straight to first place!

According to the rankings, Silver Spring stood out for several factors, most notably its bustling arts and entertainment district and the more than 150 restaurants located downtown.

To support their point, they also discussed the city’s great diversity, claiming that Silver Spring feels like a small “melting pot,” similar to what you find in most big cities, while still maintaining its charm and friendliness.

Things to do in Silver Spring, Maryland

If you happen to be in Silver Spring, not only is there a distance of about 6 miles from the capital city itself, making commuting to and from DC a breeze, but there are also plenty of exciting things to do.

One of the things that was specifically mentioned in the ranking was Watch independent films at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Centersomething we’d like to do ourselves soon as it sounds like a good time!

Another funny thing is experience a performance at the Fillmorean iconic concert hall that has hosted some incredible icons over the years.
