If you’re retired and don’t think you’ll benefit from a Costco membership, think again. You may no longer need to buy many of the bulk items offered at the big-box store, but there are still plenty of ways to save.

This may mean changing your thinking about the kinds of purchases you made when your kids were little, but it can pay off. From healthcare to travel, here are seven ways you can stick to your fixed-income budget by shopping at Costco.

Pharmacy

Medicare might help cover the cost of your prescription drugs, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have a copay. According to GoodRx, the average out-of-pocket cost per prescription was $15.79 in May 2024.

No matter how much you pay in prescription copays, it can add up quickly—especially on a fixed income. However, it can be helpful to fill your prescriptions at Costco.

By having your prescriptions shipped to Costco Pharmacy, you can save up to 80% on common medications, including any prescriptions your pet may need.

Additionally, you can save money on vaccinations and boosters, so you can get the healthcare you need without paying more than necessary.

Optical

You may not know it, but Costco offers optical services. In fact, you can get Kirkland Signature High Definition 1.60 high-index lenses at no additional cost – but that’s just one of the benefits.

If you already know what frame you want, you can shop online and get optical frames starting at $59.99. You can also get member-exclusive discounts on a variety of sunglasses models.

These discounts can save you a lot of money since most Medicare plans do not cover vision care. However, if you have alternative insurance, Costco accepts most insurance plans for in-store purchases and exams.

Tires

If you still drive, car tires are a necessity, but they aren’t cheap. According to Consumer Reports, the average cost is $194 per tire.

Costco offers free installation on all tires purchased at a Costco Tire Center. You’ll also receive a number of other perks, including tire rotation, tire pressure checks, nitrogen tire inflation, balancing, and tire repairs.

In addition, Costco regularly offers additional discounts on select tires, so you can save even more if you have the luxury of being able to choose when to purchase new tires – meaning you don’t suddenly realize that your tires need replacing immediately.

Household items

Now that your kids are out of the house, it may seem like overkill to buy household supplies in bulk, like paper towels and toilet paper. However, you can still use these items, even if it takes a little longer.

A 30-pack of Kirkland Signature toilet paper costs $23.49, or $1.65 per 100 square feet. For comparison, a 32-pack of Angel Soft Mega Rolls costs $23.99 at Target, or $2.22 per 100 square feet.

Additionally, a 12-pack of Kirkland Signature paper towels costs $22.99, which works out to $0.01 per sheet. Much more expensive is a 12-pack of Bounty Select-a-Size dual rolls, which costs $29.40 at Walmart—or nearly $0.03 per sheet.

Durable foods

If you have a small household, you may think that there is no point in buying groceries at Costco. However, this is not true for many non-perishable foods that have a long shelf life.

For example, you can get two 20.35-ounce packs of Cheerios for $8.49—or $0.21 per ounce. An 18-ounce pack of Cheerios at Walmart, on the other hand, costs $4.44, or almost $0.25 per ounce.

Another way to save: A 43.5-ounce can of Folgers Classic Roast Ground Coffee costs $14.99 at Costco, which works out to $0.34 per ounce. At Target, you can get the same item in a 33.7-ounce can for $13.29, but you’ll pay $0.39 per ounce.

Travel

You may not know it, but Costco members get discounts on hotels, cruises, rental cars, and even entire travel packages. If your travel plans are flexible, you can even take advantage of limited-time discounts on vacation packages.

For example, Costco is currently offering a limited-time package deal to Wailea Beach Resort in Maui, Hawaii, that includes at least $765 worth of extras. For another tropical getaway, you can currently get $250 worth of extras when you book a package at the Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino through Costco.
