60-year-old man dies after attack at Reading train station

A man has died in an attack outside Reading train station.

John Donovan, 60, from West Berkshire, was attacked at around 8.45pm BST on 20 July and died in hospital on 11 August.

An autopsy revealed that Mr Donovan’s cause of death was a traumatic head injury.

A 26-year-old man from Reading who was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm on July 21 has been rearrested on suspicion of murder and manslaughter and remains in police custody.

A 39-year-old man from Slough was also arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, and a 20-year-old woman from Reading was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent on 20 July.

They were released on bail until October 13.

In an obituary published by Thames Valley Police, Mr Donovan’s family said his death had left them “devastated”.

“If any of us ever needed anything, John was always there with a smile and offering to help,” they said.

“John had a huge circle of friends due to his diverse interests, in addition to all his friends from his childhood and school days in Reading.”

They also thanked the emergency personnel who cared for him on July 20 and took him to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

Det Insp Alice Broad, of the police’s serious crime unit, said: “Our thoughts are with John Donovan’s family at this extremely difficult time.

“We have been supporting them since the incident on July 20 and will continue to do so.”
