7 of the best free souvenirs to collect while traveling

Traveling is definitely not the most budget-friendly hobby—but that doesn’t mean you can’t find cheaper hotel rooms. Avoiding expensive souvenirs or impulse purchases while abroad can be one of the quickest ways to cut your expenses.

The following travelers each have their own unique souvenirs that they collect on their travels – but the best part is that all of these travel memories are completely free.

Here are some of the best free souvenirs you can collect while traveling:

Hotel pen

“I like to collect branded ink pens when I travel,” said Alex Smith, owner of Second Dad to the Right, adding that most nice hotels, restaurants and theme parks have branded ink pens and are happy to let you keep them (they are branded for marketing purposes, after all). “I just ask if I can take them with me when I pay the bill. Then they remind me of my trip when I use them at home. And as a bonus, they’re usually good quality.”

Maps and brochures

“I like to take free maps, brochures or flyers with me when I travel and put them in a folder with plastic sleeves,” says Kay A., owner of Tiny Tot In Tokyo. “It’s a great way to remember a country or city at a certain point in time, especially with flyers, because things are always changing.”

Leaves and petals

“If you love nature or have kids like me, collecting rubbings of fallen leaves and petals in a notebook or sketchbook with colorful pens is a great way to remember a trip,” says A. “The best part is that it costs nothing, you leave local plants in their native habitat, and you get a unique souvenir that probably no one else has.”

Coasters and napkins

“Paper coasters and paper napkins are another favorite free souvenir of mine,” said A. “They are a wonderful yet practical reminder of a bar, cafe or restaurant I visited. You can use them in your home, but I prefer to display my favorite pieces.”

Crown caps

“Antique bottle caps from the local restaurant or pub make an easy-to-store keepsake,” said Charli Penn, Executive Lifestyle Director at Apartment Therapy. “At home, you can create a collection of these travel items in a souvenir or display box to share some of your favorite memories with family and friends.”

Heart-shaped rocks

“I got the idea from my favorite high school science teacher, Mrs. Suchanek. I look for rocks, shells or pieces of driftwood that are heart-shaped everywhere we go,” said Ashley Schuering, founder of The Grocery Addict. “Now we’re taking it a step further: My husband gave me a rock polisher to fulfill a childhood dream, and I use it to polish them up and make them look prettier around the house.”

Restaurant menus

“As a food blogger, food is always a big part of our travels. I love collecting restaurant menus (or taking photos of them, depending on the location), then coming home and trying to recreate our favorite dishes,” Schuering said. “Some places will even give you a rough recipe if you ask!”
