WILKES COUNTY, NC (WXII) – The search for a missing North Carolina boy has come to a tragic end.

Authorities say 8-year-old Zach Walker was found dead in a pond near his family’s home after going missing Tuesday night.

Wilkes County Emergency Services say the exact cause of Zach’s death has not yet been determined, but no foul play is suspected.

According to authorities, Zach disappeared around 6:45 p.m., after which a 16-hour search operation involving 100 to 150 emergency personnel began.

The boy’s family said he was autistic and unable to speak, and they last saw him in their front yard.

Authorities said they are working with the family to determine why he disappeared.

Finally, around noon the following day, Zach was found in a small pond about a quarter mile from their home.

Wilkes County Emergency Services said they had hoped for a better outcome and would continue to support the family.

“The family is in our thoughts and prayers and we want to support them in any way we can,” said Jason Reavis of Wiles County.

The Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office said there is a sense of loss and tragedy in the small community.
