MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Police have recovered an $80,000 Corvette that was stolen from Memphis International Airport earlier this month, but the owner says the vehicle is in poor condition.

The owner, who asked not to be identified, said the 2017 Corvette Grand Sport had two broken windows, four bullet holes and a flat tire. He is not sure where police found the car but was informed Monday that the car was in the holding area.

“I just found it today. As far as I know, MPD was the agency that found it,” he said.

The Lakeland man parked his car on the fifth floor of the Memphis airport’s economy parking lot on July 31, and when he returned five days later, it was gone.

He said airport police told him the car was caught on surveillance cameras on August 3 when a car thief drove the car out of the parking deck.

Glenn Thomas, director of strategic marketing and communications for Memphis International Airport, could not tell WREG how many vehicles have been stolen from the airport this year, but said MAPD continues to work hard to ensure the safety of passengers and employees.

The owner of the Corvette said he bought the vehicle for $80,000, even though it was worth about $56,000. He couldn’t start the car because the thieves had reprogrammed the key fob.
