9 Colorado Springs businesses hit by cars since late March: Timeline

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (KKTV) – When crooks plowed a car into two Colorado Springs gun shops on Thursday, it was just the latest crime in a long list of similar crimes reported in the city since the spring.

Starting in late March and then really escalating in May, nine businesses across the city were targeted by criminals in vehicles.

TIMELINE (click on the date to see our previous coverage of each crime):

March 26: Suspects ram their vehicle into the Smoke Tokes store on the corner of East Pikes Peak and South Academy. Both police and an employee told 11 News that the burglars then jumped out of the vehicle and took various merchandise from the store.

May 9: Suspects ram Plato’s Closet at Briargate Boulevard and Chapel Hills Mall with their car. Police say the crooks were unable to get into the store, but not for lack of trying – the driver rammed the car into the building four times while trying to get inside before giving up and fleeing the scene.

May 21: A group of children drive into the Sportsman Warehouse next to the Citadel Mall and steal guns.

May 29: The RPRZNT tobacco shop on North Circle in Parler Park is hit by a car. The owner says he moved to Springs specifically to pursue his dream of opening a vape shop and that it had only been open for a few months at the time.

July 14: A car crashes into Chief Vapor at the corner of Academy and Galley, across from Citadel Mall.

July 31: Suspects drive into two gun stores along North Academy: one in Palmer Park and the other in Carefree. The owner of the Academy and Carefree store tells 11 News the suspects then broke into one of their displays and took several handguns.

August 8: Suspects ram a gun store on Elkton Drive with their car, losing their bumper. They then drive through town and ram a gun store on Barnes near Powers. In the second case, the crooks were able to get in.
