The rumor about a sequel to “The Goonies” is the latest example of the tireless passion of fans

The rumor about a sequel to “The Goonies” is the latest example of the tireless passion of fans

Although the film was released in 1985, the passion fans have for The Goonies, the Oregon-set adventure, exemplifies the film’s tagline: “Never give up.” For years, diehard Goonies fans have been yearning for a sequel. The latest example of this interest is a rumor circulating online that the long-awaited sequel is finally happening.

The rumor is based on an article in the US Sun, the US edition of the British tabloid The Sun. As the US Sun’s description states, it offers “news, sports, celebrities and gossip.”

A headline in the US Sun proclaims: “Classic 1980s blockbuster The Goonies is getting a sequel, starring many of the original cast.”

Wow! Sounds exciting! Where did this information come from? According to the article, “a source said: A reboot of ‘The Goonies’ has been talked about for a long time, but now it’s finally been given the green light.”

The unnamed source goes on to make claims such as, “The plan is to start developing ideas for the sequel next summer, which could be released in 2026 or 2027” and “Big stars will likely return, but the possibilities for what direction the sequel will go are endless.”

Cool! So who is this source again? Who knows? The article doesn’t provide any further details about who this chatty person might be. Plus, it all sounds pretty vague and the report doesn’t come from reliable entertainment industry sources like The Hollywood Reporter or Variety.

However, that did not stop other media outlets, such as the New York Post, from jumping on the bandwagon and spreading the news.

All of this is a sign of how eagerly fans of The Goonies are awaiting news of a possible sequel. Oregonians certainly know that there are countless Goonies fans, as tourists regularly flock to Astoria and other locations on the North Coast where the film was shot.

The rumor of a sequel is not the only example of the interest that “Goonies”-related projects generate.

In early 2020, for example, entertainment industry websites reported on a possible television series about children who aim to make a shot-for-shot remake of The Goonies and a teacher who agrees to help them realize their dream.

As The Hollywood Reporter wrote, Fox has commissioned a pilot for the drama.

In December 2021, Variety reported that Fox had rejected the project “because it felt it was too young for the network.” But what was then called “Our Time” was redeveloped at Disney Plus. “The Donner Company and Amblin, who were behind the original, are back on board,” the article said. However, this project has not yet been realized.

Another example of how Goonies nostalgia never fades is a video actor Josh Gad posted on his YouTube channel in April 2020 that reunited original cast members Sean Astin (Mikey), Josh Brolin (Brand), Martha Plimpton (Stef), Kerri Green (Andy), Jeff Cohen (Chunk), Ke Huy Quan (Data), and Corey Feldman (Mouth).

Also present at the meeting were actors Joe Pantoliano and Robert Davi, who played the Fratelli brothers in the film, director Richard Donner (who died in 2021), executive producer Steven Spielberg, Cyndi Lauper and screenwriter Chris Columbus, whom Gad asked about the script for the film, which is set “in the most exciting action-adventure setting of all, Oregon.”

As The Oregonian/OregonLive reported, when asked about a sequel, Spielberg replied that it had been discussed, but the creative team could not come up with a better idea than the original.

Meanwhile, The Daily Mail, another website known for its gossip stories, has reported that some “Goonies” fans aren’t so keen on the idea of a sequel. In an article headlined “Goonies fans all make the same impassioned plea after sequel announcement sends social media into overdrive,” The Daily Mail cites posts on X that include thoughts like “‘The Goonies’ is getting a sequel. I can’t even express how much I hate this”; “Don’t they even dare reboot ‘The Goonies’! Don’t even touch it. This movie is timeless!”; and another wrote, “But the whole appeal of ‘Goonies’ is a group of kids going on adventures with a treasure map. That’s something we all imagined as kids. When it turns into a group of weird or overweight adults going back to find hidden treasure to pay their bills, the movie loses its magic.”
