Indiana police officer dies in Iroquois County shooting – NBC Chicago

An Indiana police officer injured in a shootout with a suspect in rural Iroquois County earlier this month will not survive his injuries, officials said.

According to an update from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, Cpl. Brandon Schreiber was injured in a shooting on Sept. 1. He spent the past nine days in a Champaign County hospital but will not recover from the injuries he sustained in the attack.

Schreiber was one of the officers involved in a chase earlier this month. The Iroquois County Sheriff’s Office pursued a suspect in the eastern part of the county on Sept. 1 as he crossed the state line into Indiana, prompting a call for assistance from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.

The suspect then crossed the border back into Illinois and caused a vehicle crash in Sheldon, authorities said. A gun battle ensued, during which the 37-year-old suspect was shot by police. He was pronounced dead from his injuries.

According to authorities, the Illinois State Police are investigating the police-involved shooting portion of the case.

Schreiber was also shot and taken to a hospital in Watseka. Authorities said he was later flown by helicopter to a hospital in Urbana.

According to officials, Schreiber is an organ donor and his “sacrifice offers him the opportunity to help many other people.”

Officials said there were “many unknowns” and could not provide any further updated information.
