Johnston RI Attempted Child Abduction – NECN

Police are looking for a person in connection with an attempted child abduction that occurred Friday afternoon in a park in Johnston, Rhode Island.

Johnston Police issued a public alert regarding the incident at Johnston War Memorial Park and asked for the public’s assistance in the case.

NBC10’s Boston affiliate WJAR reported that the attempted kidnapping occurred around 3:30 p.m. Friday and involved an 8-year-old child attending a summer camp at the park at 1583 Hartford Avenue.

According to WJAR, police said the child was sitting on a park bench when a man jogging by approached her and pulled a small brown bottle and a towel from his pocket.

The man then reportedly moistened the cloth with the substance from the bottle and told the camper to “come here.”

The child called out to camp counselors for help, and the man fled into the men’s restroom. He later left the restroom shirtless and ran on foot toward Atwood Avenue, police said.

Officers were unable to locate the man in the area. He is described as being in his late 20s to early 30s, about 6 feet tall, with olive skin and black hair. He was last seen wearing a white or gray tank top, black and reddish shorts and carrying a large black water bottle and a shoulder bag, police said.
