WATCH: Harris says she won’t ban fracking

Debate moderators asked Vice President Kamala Harris why some of her policy positions had changed since she last ran for office. During her Democratic primary bid in 2019, Harris said she would support a ban on fracking, a controversial technique that extracts gas and oil from rock formations.

“My values have not changed,” Harris said.

During the debate with former President Donald Trump on September 10 in the swing state of Pennsylvania, she said the vote on the Inflation Control Act, which opens new leases for fracking, would be the deciding vote.

“My position is that we need to invest in diverse energy sources to reduce our dependence on foreign oil,” she said. “We have seen the largest increase in domestic oil production in history because we have taken an approach that recognizes that we cannot rely too heavily on foreign oil.”

Harris and Trump met for their first and possibly only debate, hosted by ABC in Philadelphia. Harris replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic presidential nominee this summer after Biden’s troubling performance at the debate in June, fueling calls for him to drop out of the race.

According to the latest PBS News/NPR/Marist poll, more than two-thirds of Americans say they will watch all or most of the debate. While many voters have already made up their minds, 14 percent of Americans say the debate will have a major impact on which candidate they vote for.
