Governor urges Pennsylvanians to vote to keep the “Republic” strong

WILKES-BARRE – Before Gov. Josh Shapiro left Wilkes-Barre for Philadelphia to attend the debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump Tuesday night, he said Pennsylvania will undoubtedly decide the presidential election.

Shapiro said he was glad Harris would face Trump because the debate would show the difference between the two candidates. The debate was scheduled for 9 p.m.

“The contrast couldn’t be clearer,” Shapiro said. “Here in Pennsylvania, it’s neck and neck – and we need everyone on board now to elect Kamala Harris as our first female president, send Bob Casey back to Washington, and ensure Democrats win on every ballot in November.”

Shapiro expressed confidence that Harris would do well in the debate, adding: “Donald Trump will lie a lot.”

“Kamala Harris has the ability to lift people up,” Shapiro said. “I think every Pennsylvanian should think about that.”

The debate was scheduled to take place at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia’s historic district, which is also home to the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, where the U.S. Constitution was signed.

Shapiro recalled another governor of Pennsylvania, Ben Franklin.

In 1787, Franklin was asked by Elizabeth Willing Powell: “So, doctor, which have we, a republic or a monarchy?”

Shapiro said Franklin replied, “A republic, if you can get it.”

Shapiro said that given the current political situation in America, voters have a responsibility to continue our republic, as Franklin said.

“The entire election will be decided here in Pennsylvania,” Shapiro said. “That’s why we have to go out and vote on November 5.”
