Opening hours of polling stations for the 2024 local elections and when they close

On Thursday, May 2, voters will go to the polls to cast their important votes in this year’s local elections.

The local elections are about 2,600 seats at stake in 107 of England’s 317 local authorities, with the Conservatives and Labour defending just under 1,000 seats each. In the Liverpool City Region, people also have the opportunity to elect the metro mayor, a position currently held by Steve Rotheram, who is running for re-election, and the person they want to do policing.

This position has been held by Emily Spurrell of the Labour Party since 2021 and she is seeking a second term.

Once all the votes have been cast, the lengthy process of counting the votes will begin. Results are expected in the early hours of the morning. However, in some areas, counting will begin on Friday and results are expected later that day or even on Saturday.

Polls open at 7am and stay open until 10pm on Thursday. Your local polling station is listed on your voting notice, but you can also find it on your local council website.

You don’t need to bring your voting card with you, but under new rules introduced last year, you must bring photo ID.
