Elon Musk criticised for ‘disturbing’ post about Taylor Swift’s support for Kamala Harris

Elon Musk has been criticized for his “creepy” comments about Taylor Swift after she supported Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 US presidential election.

The 53-year-old billionaire posted about Swift on X (formerly Twitter) on September 11, just hours after she revealed on Instagram who she would vote for in the upcoming election. The Grammy winner shared a snap of herself posing with her cat Benjamin Button – apparently a dig at Donald Trump’s running mate JD Vance. Swift captioned her message, “Childless cat lady.”

Musk, who continues to publicly support Trump and Vance, responded to Swift’s support: “Well, Taylor… you won… I will give you a child and protect your cats with my life.”

The father of 12’s viral post has sparked enormous outrage online, with several people calling the remark bizarre. “This tweet takes things to a whole new level of weird. It’s not even eccentric at this point, it’s just plain disturbing,” one person wrote in response.

“Elon responding tonight by telling Taylor Swift he was going to impregnate her is the height of weird and disgusting behavior,” said another user.

“Cringe just called and asked you to stop that, Leon,” a third replied, referring to Trump mistakenly calling the Tesla founder “Leon” at a recent rally.

Others hit back at the obvious joke Musk made about Swift, describing how inappropriate his comment was towards a woman. “No offense Elon Musk, but no self-respecting woman would agree to that and I’m sure Taylor Swift is a woman who may decide in the future to have a child with a man who truly loves her for who she is… And yes… I am a Taylor Swift fan,” one person said.

“Dude, if you want to learn how to talk to women, I’m here for you. But I write the contract, not your lawyers. Apparently they have no idea how bad it is,” another added.

“This is what you post when you have 197 million followers? Harris won the debate tonight and now you want to give a baby to Taylor Swift who has no interest in you. Is this some kind of alpha male dominance that makes you feel powerful and masculine? Does it work?” wrote a third user.

Immediately after the presidential debate between Trump and Harris on Tuesday, Swift officially endorsed the Democratic candidates on Instagram.

“I will be voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 presidential election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes that I believe need a fighter to represent them. I think she is a calm, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country when we are led by calm, not chaos,” the “Fortnight” singer wrote in the caption. “I was so encouraged and impressed by her choice of her running mate @timwalz, who has been an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades.”

She also referenced recent AI-generated images of her “falsely” supporting Trump for president – the former president had reposted these images on his social media platform Truth Social. The post included an AI image of Swift dressed as Uncle Sam and urging voters to support Trump. Other images showed young women wearing T-shirts reading “Swifties for Trump.”

“It really revived my fears about AI and the dangers of spreading misinformation,” Swift continued. “It made me realize that as a voter, I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election. The easiest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.”

Swift has previously spoken out about her political views and the importance of voting. In September 2023, she called on her US fans to get active on National Voter Registration Day. “Are you registered to vote yet? I was so lucky to see so many of you at my US shows recently,” she wrote on Instagram, referring to her concert leg of the US Eras Tour. “I’ve heard you raise your voices and I know how powerful they are. Make sure you’re ready to use them in our elections this year.”

Days later, voter registration website Vote.org announced that Swift had managed to attract a record number of voters to the site. Nick Morrow — Vote.org’s communications director — said his company’s website had “an average of 13,000 visitors every 30 minutes” following the “Anti-Hero” singer’s post.

Swift first broke her political silence in 2018, after previously being criticized for her lack of involvement in major political events in the United States, such as the Black Lives Matter movement and the 2016 presidential election.

“As a country music artist, I was always told it was better to stay out of politics,” Swift explained. “The Trump presidency forced me to get involved and educate myself. I talked to my boyfriend (then-actor Joe Alwyn) about the government, the presidency and politics, and he supported me in voicing my opinions. I started talking to my family and friends about politics and learning as much as I could about my position.”
