September 11 memorial ceremonies and tributes planned throughout DMV

Wednesday marks the 23rd anniversary of the September 11 attacks, and communities in Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia are coming together to remember the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives on that tragic day.

Several events and ceremonies are planned throughout the region to commemorate the victims, their families and first responders.

Here is a list of some events:

WASHINGTON, DC:

9/11 Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony – 4:00 p.m. National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund Ceremony at 444 E Street, NW

More than 1,300 volunteers will pay tribute by helping to package 367,500 healthy, non-perishable meals starting at 9 a.m. at Dock5 in Union Market; 1309 5th St NE

Unfurling the Flag at the Pentagon – The National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial will be temporarily closed to the public

VIRGINIA:

September 11th Remembrance – Arlington County Wreath Laying Ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Ellen M. Bozman County Government Center

September 11th Remembrance Ceremony – 8:30 a.m., Leesburg Mayor Kelly Burk and members of the City Council will hold a ceremony at Freedom Park, 101 Colonel Grenata Circle

Carry The Load, a national nonprofit, invites volunteers to clean headstones and beautify sacred sites – 9 a.m. at Alexandria National Cemetery

Northern Virginia Veterans Association – A 9/11 Remembrance Event at 3 p.m. on the lawn of the Manassas Museum

MARYLAND:

September 11th Remembrance Ceremony and Wreath Laying – At 9 a.m., the Anne Arundel County Fire Department and Police Department will hold a joint ceremony at Police Headquarters, 8495 Veterans Highway, Millersville.

National Harbor – At 5 p.m., National Harbor will honor the region’s first responders with a dinner from Bombay Street Food, free rides on the Capital Wheel, awards, a short ceremony and a concert by the U.S. Navy Band.

US Naval Academy – Beginning at 8:46 a.m. The Brigade of Midshipmen will participate in the 9/11 Remembrance Run at the Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
