IDF increases GPS jamming amid tensions and threats from Iran and Hezbollah

Given the possibility that Hezbollah and Iran could fire precision missiles and unmanned aircraft towards Israel, the Israeli military has increased the use of GPS jammers in the Eilat area on the Jordanian border and in the northern area near the Lebanese border.

Even at the end of Netanyahu’s visit to the United States about two weeks ago, flightradar24 – the website that displays real-time flight data of passenger aircraft on a map – showed that the “Zion Wing” plane used by Prime Minister Netanyahu had landed in Beirut due to GPS interference.

Last week, it was announced that navigation apps Waze, Google Maps and Moovit had been disrupted in central Israel over fears of an Iranian response to the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.

The applications’ locations did not match users’ actual locations. They showed users in the Iranian capital, Tehran or Lebanon.

Since October 7, the Israeli army has been conducting proactive jamming, mainly in the northern and southern regions of the country. The aim of these jammings is apparently to disrupt the activities of enemy aircraft and drones that use GPS systems for navigation.

Recruitment for the North, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip

Already on the morning of October 7, the commander of the electronic warfare unit, Colonel Y., ordered to begin general recruitment and to operate in three sectors: the north, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

The unit reported a 130% recruitment rate of reservists on Saturday night, including an 80-year-old veteran.

It is an elite tactical unit of fighters and fighters who also operate in enemy territory to disrupt activities in the frequency space and enable Israeli fighters to operate undisturbed in the air, at sea and on land.

The importance of the Electronic Warfare Headquarters Unit lies in its flexibility to move quickly from place to place and deploy its capabilities on the ground.
