Aubrey Plaza reveals more details about a sudden, unexplained stroke she suffered at the age of 20.

The Parks and Recreation Alum, now 40, appeared on Sirius XM’s Howard Stern Show on September 11, where she spoke about her health crisis and recalled losing her ability to speak. “It was wild,” she said.

“It happened in the middle of a sentence,” Plaza told Stern. DelawareOnline.

Plaza, who left her hometown of Delaware to attend New York University, said she was on the subway on her way to a friend’s apartment when the unexplained medical incident occurred.

“I took the train to Astoria to have lunch with my friends, and as I walked into their apartment – I hadn’t even taken off my jacket – it just happened,” she told Stern.

The White Lotus The star told Stern: “I was paralyzed, but actually only for a minute or so. I lost my motor skills for a very short time. The craziest thing was that I forgot how to speak.”

It wasn’t the first time she had mentioned her stroke. In a 2017 interview with NPR’s Fresh Air, she said that friends called paramedics who initially “thought I was on drugs because they kept asking me if I had taken drugs, which I hadn’t. I hadn’t really put anything in my body that day other than birth control.”

While she was in the hospital, Plaza said, it was determined she was having a stroke when a doctor “asked me to put my right hand on my left knee. And I couldn’t. I confused right and left. And I think that’s when everyone realized she was having a stroke.”

There are two types of strokes – ischemic and hemorrhagic – explains the Mayo Clinic. In an ischemic stroke, the blood supply to part of the brain is blocked or reduced, while in a hemorrhagic stroke, as the name suggests, there is bleeding in the brain.

Plaza told NPR, “Since then, I’ve had some minor – they call them TIAs, they’re transient ischemic attacks, they’re tiny little strokes.”

She is currently recovering from another injury. As the publication said, she was late for the interview because she is still suffering from a torn ACL – an injury she sustained while playing basketball during NBA All-Star Weekend.
