When Jim Cantore comes to town, most residents groan and moan or seek shelter.

But at a bakery in Morgan City, where Cantore was stationed Tuesday to cover Hurricane Francine, the meteorologist was a welcome surprise after they baked cupcakes in his honor.

Sweet & Simple Coffee & Sweets featured Cantore, dressed in his Weather Channel jacket, serving two types of cupcakes and urging guests to “come in and get the perfect hurricane snack” before Francine made landfall.

There were two flavors to choose from: classic vanilla and shrimp boil, a vanilla cupcake with a secret blend of spices, and Zatarain’s shrimp boil added to the batter. The Louisiana bakery has been selling the shrimp boil variety for 14 years and it’s a favorite with locals.

“It has a slight spiciness and a strong, delicious flavor,” said Sweet & Simple Coffee & Sweets on Facebook.

A few hours after the Facebook post went live, Jim Cantore and his Weather Channel crew showed up to try the cupcakes for themselves.

Cantore left the bakery with a dozen cupcakes and the sweet treats later sold out.

Morgan City is bracing for severe impacts from Francine, which is expected to make landfall near the coastal city Wednesday evening as a Category 1 hurricane.
