Chappell Roan insults photographers at the MTV VMAs

Chappell Roan appeared to clapped back at a photographer as he walked the carpet at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.

Roan berated the photographer who appeared to tell her to “shut up” on the red carpet while she was adjusting her dress.

When Roan heard this, she immediately turned around from her back to the paparazzi and shouted back: β€œShut up.”

“Not me, bitch,” she added, looking at the same photographer.

TODAY.com has reached out to Roan for comment.

Although it is not clear what sparked the argument, some fans believe Roan may have been standing up for someone who was told to “shut up.”

“I think what happened was one photographer said ‘give us something to look at’, another person said ‘shut up’ and then she chimed in to tell the original photographer to shut up too,” one person commented on Instagram. “No idea but I guess maybe she’ll talk about it lol.”

“She literally defended someone guys please πŸ™„,” another person wrote.

A third praised Roan for her voice, saying: “πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ We love when women fight against the patriarchy!!!!”

Roan walked the red carpet in a medieval-inspired outfit. While holding a sword in one hand, she posed for photos in a stunning Y/Project dress.

In an interview with MTV, Roan said she had a β€œtheme.”

“I’m not going to give everything away, but I’m telling you, take notes,” she said, hinting at some sort of impending revelation.

This year, Roan was nominated for four VMAs, including Best New Artist, Push Performance of the Year, Song of the Summer and Best Trending Video.

On the red carpet, she told MTV that she had “never won anything” and would be thrilled to take home a Moon Man statuette.

“Just looking out and seeing people that I’ve been listening to forever or just like, that I really look up to, that’s the scary part,” she explained before her performance. “But it would be crazy to win! That would be amazing!”

At the event, she told E! News: “I feel like I really earned my way here and freaks deserve trophies.”

Roan then referenced Sabrina Carpenter, Taylor Swift and Camila Cabello.

“It’s just like, damn, I’m up here with Miss Sabrina, and I’m up here with Miss Taylor, and I’m up here with Camila. It’s cool to be with the pop girlies,” she said. “I felt like I was on the other side for a long time just because I’m a freak.”
