Commentators missed the moment A’ja Wilson broke the WNBA points record

A’ja Wilson is having a season like no other in WNBA history.

The Las Vegas Aces star set the all-time WNBA single-season record for most points scored on Wednesday night when he hit a mid-range jump shot in the second quarter, surpassing Seattle Storm star Jewell Loyd, who set the mark last season with 939 points.

Unfortunately, this moment in league history was not honored during the WNBA League Pass broadcast. The Indiana Fever commentary team, consisting of live commentator Pat Boylan and analyst Debbie Antonelli, went through Wilson’s record-breaking shot as if it were a normal basket.

To be fair, the broadcast did mention Wilson’s pursuit of the record in the first quarter when she scored the Aces’ first 10 points of the game. They just missed the moment Wilson made WNBA history.

However, Wilson’s moment did not go unnoticed by the rest of the WNBA world. Shortly after Wilson made NBA history, her former college coach Dawn Staley congratulated her on social media.

Wilson played for Staley at South Carolina for four seasons from 2014-18 and played a starring role in the Gamecocks’ national championship run in 2017. The 28-year-old is now well into her professional career and is the favorite to win her third WNBA MVP award this season, having entered Wednesday averaging a league-high 27.3 points and 11.9 rebounds per game.

WNBA fans congratulated Staley Wilson on her performance:

Wilson, who scored 27 points in the Aces’ 86-75 win over the Fever, has two games left in the regular season to extend her point record set last season.
