Halsey to perform her new single “Ego” at the 2024 MTV VMAs

Halsey just channeled A crazy Friday‘s pink slip at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.

On Wednesday, September 11, the 29-year-old pop star (who uses the pronouns “she” and “them”) took the stage at the UBS Arena in New York and performed his latest single, “Ego.”

To begin her performance, Halsey – wearing a white collared shirt with a black tie, oversized denim shorts and black lace-up boots – arrived on a bicycle and joined a band in a mock garage to sing the pop-punk anthem. Halsey was also accompanied by Måneskin’s Victoria De Angelis on bass.

“I guess I should try to kill my ego/’Cause if I don’t, my ego might kill me,” Halsey sang as she strummed her guitar. “I’m all grown up, but lately I’ve been kind of acting like a damn baby/I’m really not as happy as I seem.”

In the 2003 comedy A crazy FridayIn “The Lindsay Lohan Wife,” Lindsay Lohan’s character and her friends form an all-girl garage band and play rock music.

Last month, it was announced that Halsey would perform at the VMAs alongside Lenny Kravitz, Lisa, Benson Boone, Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Camila Cabello, GloRilla and Rauw Alejandro.

On Friday, September 6, the “Without Me” singer released “Ego” and its music video.

Written and directed by Halsey, the film features two versions of the musician – one female and one more androgynous – facing off over dinner, chasing each other through a house and trying to kill each other.

In the final moments of the video, the more feminine version of Halsey hides in the back seat of her alter ego’s car and strangles her.

The number with an alternative twist in the style of the 90s shows Halsey struggling with public perception and her inner distress.
