Taylor Swift and Chappell Roan win the 2024 main prizes

Taylor Swift and Chappell Roan win the 2024 main prizes

From political statements to pop star fame, Taylor Swift has everything she wants.

The singer of “The Tortured Poets Department,” who caused a stir last night with her support for Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 US presidential election, took home the coveted Video of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday.

She won the award together with Post Malone for their collaboration “Fortnight”.

In typical Swift fashion, the pop superstar thanked the Swifties for their passionate support. And in a nod to her recent presidential election, she also urged viewers to register to vote.

Swift, who topped the VMA list with 10 nominations, also won the night’s first award – best collaboration – for her Malone duet.

The “I Can Do it with a Broken Heart” singer thanked Malone for accompanying her on stage and used her acceptance speech to remember the victims of the September 11 attacks (the VMAs aired on the 23rd anniversary of the terrorist attack).

“I woke up this morning on September 11th in New York,” Swift said. “We all lost, and that’s the most important thing about this day.”

Sabrina Carpenter, the opening act on Swift’s Eras Tour, also had a big hit at the VMAs. Carpenter, who dominated the summer with her disco-pop hit “Espresso,” nabbed the Song of the Year honor for the first time for “Moon Person.”

International artists also made waves at the star-studded awards ceremony, which was broadcast live from New York’s UBS Arena. South African singer Tyla won the award for best Afrobeats, while Thai rapper and Blackpink member Lisa won the award for best K-pop.

Here’s a look at the biggest winners (in bold) of the night.
