AI-generated wallpapers and backgrounds for video calls

We like to personalize our devices, which Google makes easier with the Material You theme. This theme takes colors from your background (or a color you choose) and styles your device’s menus and UI elements according to those colors. To get the most out of this feature, you’ll need a great wallpaper. While Chromebooks come with lots of wonderful wallpapers by default, you might want something more. That’s where AI-generated wallpapers come in.

Chromebooks can use Gemini AI to generate a background based on a prompt you give it. Let’s say you want a background with a “cabin on a quiet New England beach.” Gemini will use that prompt to generate some background options for you. Here’s how to generate wallpapers:

  1. Right-click on your current background image.
  2. Choose Set background image and style.

Now you have a new AI generated wallpaper that you can change anytime. You can also choose Inspire me to display a random prompt with options. Since you can only edit these pre-determined sentences, this is not a full-fledged way to create AI wallpapers. However, it works well for the purpose.

You can also use this feature to create backgrounds for meetings you attend. Tap the Arrow next to the video icon on the right side of your shelf and select the Picture option. After selecting this option, you will be taken to the same screen that you use to create a wallpaper.
