Orlando Bloom says Katy Perry’s real name at the VMAs. Why she changed it

There is only one Katy Perry – even if she is not a real Katy Perry.

Yes, when Orlando Bloom presented his fiancée Perry with the 2024 Video Vanguard Award at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards on September 11, he used the “Roar” singer’s real name: Katheryn Hudson.

“You fell in love with her as Katy Perry. I fell in love with her as Katheryn Hudson,” the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star began. “You know her as a global superstar who brings love, light and her unique sense of humor to every song she writes and every music video she creates.”

Bloom, who has been engaged to Perry since 2019 and has 4-year-old daughter Daisy with her, also praised her off-stage skills.

“I know her as a mother, as a partner who brings the same love and joy to our family,” he said.

“In moments when we needed it most, her music and the remarkable world she creates have evoked a sense of joy and laughter and inspired generations of people around the world. She loves with all her heart and that is somehow irresistible. I see it reflected everywhere in our house, in her love for her work, but especially in her love for her fans.

Bloom then announced her upcoming album “143,” again dropping her original name.

“Congratulations on this honor baby, I am so proud of you. 143! Ladies and gentlemen, your MTV Video Vanguard 2024, Katheryn Hudson – Katy Perry!”

What is Katy Perry’s real name?

Perry’s birth name is Katheryn Hudson and she released a Christian rock album called “Katy Hudson” in 2001 before releasing her breakthrough album, “One of the Boys,” in 2008, recorded under the name Katy Perry.

Why did Katy Perry change her name?

“Perry took her mother’s maiden name to avoid confusion with Kate Hudson,” Rolling Stone reported in a 2010 profile of the singer.

The “Woman’s World” singer, who famously grew up in a very strict Christian upbringing, said it was much easier to become Katy Perry than the person she was.

“A lot of people live in fear of something that happened in their childhood or some form of PTSD that they have acquired over time, and I created this wonderful character called Katy Perry, who I am very strong and who I can slip into at any time, but I created this character for protective reasons,” she told The Guardian in 2017.

“I was afraid that if you saw me, Katheryn Hudson, the girl with the Bioré stripe on her nose, you would say, ‘That’s not glamorous.’ I thought to myself, ‘OK, I was sad my whole childhood, so I’m going to show the world that I am something, that I’m going to do something, and that I’m good enough.'”

“I didn’t want to be Katheryn Hudson. I hated it, it was too scary, so I decided to be someone else.”
