Woman meets with NFL to discuss allegations against Deshaun Watson

BEREA, Ohio — The attorney for the plaintiff in a civil lawsuit accusing Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson of sexual assault and battery told ESPN Thursday that the woman will speak to the NFL within two weeks.

“We will schedule a meeting with the NFL and hope to do so in the next two weeks,” attorney Tony Buzbee wrote in an email. “We have video and two other witnesses the NFL can speak to. I personally have never had faith in the NFL’s disciplinary process, but my client has chosen to utilize it.”

According to the lawsuit filed Monday in Harris County, Texas, the alleged acts occurred in October 2020 before Watson and a woman identified in the court filing as Jane Doe were scheduled to have dinner at the woman’s apartment. Watson was a member of the Houston Texans at the time.

Watson denied the allegations in a statement released Wednesday by his attorney, Rusty Hardin.

The NFL said Tuesday that it is reviewing the complaint under its rules of conduct, but the league added that Watson will not be placed on the commissioner’s exempt list because there is no formal charge and the league’s review has only just begun.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said Wednesday that Watson will still play against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, but declined to comment on the lawsuit, referring to a team statement released Tuesday.

In a statement released Wednesday, Buzbee said he had been in contact with Watson’s lawyers for months to resolve the matter privately.

Watson said he learned about the lawsuit when it surfaced and was surprised by the allegations. When asked about Buzbee’s claim that he contacted Hardin’s office 10 months ago, Watson replied, “I’m not aware of that.”

Watson served an 11-game suspension in 2022 after more than two dozen women accused him of sexual assault and inappropriate conduct during massage sessions. Two grand juries in Texas declined to bring charges against Watson, but he served his suspension after the NFL and NFL Players Association reached a settlement in his disciplinary matter.

Watson also had to pay a $5 million fine, undergo a mandatory evaluation by behavioral experts and complete their suggested treatment program before he could be reinstated in the league.

Watson reached settlements in 23 of the 24 lawsuits filed against him in the summer of 2022.

The lawsuit filed Monday is unrelated to the two remaining active lawsuits (one filed in summer 2022 and one filed in October of this year) brought by women who have accused Watson of sexual assault during massage sessions.

In the previous civil cases, a judge had required the women suing Watson to use their real names in court documents. Hardin told ESPN on Wednesday that he plans to ask the court to require the woman who sued Watson on Monday to also use her name in court documents.

In March 2022, the Browns traded six draft picks, including three first-round picks, for Watson, giving him a fully guaranteed $230 million deal, which was an NFL record at the time.

Due to the suspension and injuries, Watson was only able to start 13 games for Cleveland.
