Even though Odell Beckham Jr.’s most dynamic years are behind him, the 31-year-old was still considered a valuable addition to the Dolphins’ wide receivers during the offseason.
After missing the 2022 season with a torn ACL, Beckham signed with the Ravens in 2023 and caught 35 passes for 565 yards and three touchdowns in 14 regular-season games. Beckham played in both of Baltimore’s playoff games and was released by the team in March.
Beckham signed with the Dolphins in early May but did not participate in OTAs or the offseason minicamp. When training camp began in late July, Beckham was placed on the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
At the end of the preseason, Beckham was placed on the reserve/PUP list, ruling him out for at least the first four games of the 2024 season. Here’s more on why Beckham’s participation has been limited since joining Miami.

What’s wrong with Odell Beckham Jr.?
Beckham was placed on the reserve/PUP list due to an unspecified injury. All reports indicate that Beckham’s illness was known to the Dolphins franchise during contract negotiations.
Before training camp, Beckham was reportedly placed on the reserve/PUP list because he was “working on minor things,” according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
According to an August 27 report by Ian Rapoport and Pelissero, it was revealed that Beckham underwent an offseason procedure. The details of the procedure were not disclosed.
Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said the decision to place Beckham on the reserve/PUP list was made out of an abundance of caution.
“We were very confident it would happen around Week 1,” Grier told the media. “To be honest, we put him (on the PUP list). He didn’t want to go down and he’s very close … for us, it was the long-term play.”
“We didn’t want him to rush it back. We felt like he had to rush it and then something would happen that would set us back. So Mike (McDaniel) and I sat down and talked to Kyle (Johnston, head track and field coach) and the coaches and we just felt like it was best for him in the long run.”
The earliest Beckham can return is when the Dolphins visit the Patriots in Week 5. Miami has no playing time in Week 6, and if Beckham sits out the first five games, he could get an extra week to recover without missing another game.
Beckham is expected to be Miami’s WR3 behind stars Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. The Dolphins’ WR room also includes Braxton Berrios, Robbie Chosen and Grant DuBose.
