Dexter is once again ready to have a damn good time.

The prolific serial killer returns to the screen with Dexter: Original Sin, Premiering on Paramount+ with Showtime on Friday, December 13, this prequel series, starring Patrick Gibson as Dexter Morgan, follows the iconic character’s “transformation from schoolboy to vengeful serial killer.”

“When he can no longer ignore his bloodthirsty urges, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness,” the synopsis states. “Under the guidance of his father Harry (Christian Slater), he adopts a code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without landing on the radar of law enforcement. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensic internship with the Miami Metro Police Department.”

In the first teaser for the crime drama, Gibson steps out of an elevator while narrator Michael C. Hall declares off-screen: “I’m a killer.” Hall played Dexter in the original Showtime series.

“But I wasn’t born that way,” he continues as the teaser briefly switches to CSI boss Tanya Martin (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Harry. “I was shaped by my history and the people around me.”

While bass-heavy club music blares in the background, the clip features other stars of the cast, including Christina Milian and Patrick Dempsey, and weaves in clips of a high school brawl.

“They say it takes a village to raise a killer,” Hall adds as Dexter swings a serrated knife.

The teaser ends with the camera focused on Dexter, a grim expression crossing his face, before the show’s blood-red title flashes on the screen.

In addition to Gibson, Gellar, Slater, Dempsey and Milian, Molly Brown, Debra Morgan, James Martinez, Alex Shimizu and Reno Wilson complete the cast. Dexter Showrunner Clyde Phillips will also once again direct the prequel series.

The casting of Gellar, Slater and Dempsey in particular was a conscious decision by network executives to “capture” the 1990s era in which the series is set, as PEOPLE reported back in June. To achieve this, they chose actors who had appeared in notable projects of the 1990s and are still stars today.

Dexter: Original Sin follows the eight seasons of Dexter, with Hall and Jennifer Carpenter, which ran from 2006 to 2013 and spawned the miniseries Dexter: New blood.

The original series won four Emmy Awards, including Best Directing in a Drama Series in 2010 and Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series in 2010 for John Lithgow’s portrayal of Arthur Mitchell. Hall also won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Drama in 2010.
