TE Evan Engram copes with a tough opening loss for the Jaguars against Miami

JACKSONVILLE – Week 1 was frustrating. And it seemed too familiar.

But if a loss in the opening game of the 2024 regular season had those characteristics, it would not become a trend, said Jaguars tight end Evan Engram.

“We’re definitely going to keep going,” Engram said after Sunday’s 20-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.

It was the Jaguars’ sixth loss in seven games, and wide receiver Gabe Davis said – like Engram – that this will not determine the Jaguars’ future.

“It’s Week 1,” Davis said. “We’re 16 weeks in. It was really good to see the video and see that we’re so close.”

The Jaguars’ 1-5 record in 2023 kept them out of the postseason, but Engram stressed Monday that the Jaguars “have put last year far behind them.”

“We have a much better team,” Engram said. “We’re much more focused. We prepare better. That’s the frustrating thing: We’ve seen what we’re capable of against a really good team, against a good offense and a good defense.”

“There are definitely things we can learn. We’ve put everything that happened last year behind us. It’s frustrating. We got a taste of how great we can be. We just didn’t get there.”

The Jaguars held the Dolphins – the NFL’s second-best offense last season – to 20 points, and head coach Doug Pederson on Monday praised a run defense that limited the Dolphins to 83 yards. He noted that three passes from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa – an 80-yard touchdown to wide receiver Tyreek Hill, a 63-yard touchdown to wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and a 39-yard touchdown to running back De’Von Archane – accounted for the bulk of the Dolphins’ offense.
