In addition to transporting passengers, the airport will also have a multiplier effect on the region’s exports, Erdoğan said, pointing out that it will create 3,000 jobs.

“We will ship products from industrial and commercial zones such as Mersin Port, Mersin and Adana Organized Industrial Zones, Iskenderun Bay Industrial Facilities and Yumurtalık Free Zone to the whole world through this route,” he added.

The agricultural products produced in the Çukurova region can now be delivered to customers easily and without delay, and the airport will make it easier for companies to access larger markets, the President said.

They have invested heavily in airport traffic over the past 22 years, said Erdoğan, noting that the number of active airports has increased from 26 to 58 during this period. Their goal is to increase this number to 61 by 2053.

Çukurova Airport was developed under the Build-Operate-Transfer program with a total investment of 244.5 million euros.

The airport’s lease income is expected to amount to 297.1 million euros in 25 years.

The airport, which has an annual passenger capacity of nine million passengers and a terminal area of 110,000 square meters, is also expected to boost tourism in the region.

The main runway is 3,500 metres long and 60 metres wide and the airport apron has space for 48 aircraft.
