The cradle stories

Aside from the main and co-main event participants, all eyes were on Ortega on Friday. A mishap at the weigh-in involving O’Malley, Dvalishvili, Grasso or Shevchenko would dramatically change the event, but Ortega has struggled to make the featherweight limits of late.

Ortega was scheduled to fight Lopes at UFC 300, but both men agreed to step in at short notice. Ortega had been preparing for the move to lightweight, but decided to accept the challenge and fight the up-and-coming Brazilian.

The weight cut was too much for Ortega, who pulled out on the day of the fight. His withdrawal allowed for a heroic save in short order by Dan Ige.

Lopes came through an emotionally draining week against Ige to finally be in a position to face Ortega on Saturday. There was some concern about him on Friday due to Ortega’s previous struggles at 145.

He weighed in at 146 pounds, just over the featherweight limit. While he didn’t look terrible on the scales, he looked the most exhausted of all the fighters weighed in Friday.

With it being difficult for him to get to 145 and the path to another featherweight title shot likely more complicated, Saturday’s fight with Lopes will likely be Ortega’s last fight in the division.

A win for Ortega would give him a nice boost as he hopes to earn a title shot at lightweight, while a win for Lopes would help him continue his meteoric rise up the 145-pound rankings.

If he beats Ortega, Lopes could prove he’s next in line for a title shot – perhaps against the winner of the UFC 308 main event between champion Ilia Topuria and Max Holloway. Even if he has to wait, another win would almost certainly be enough to prove he should be the next challenger for the featherweight belt.
