Recap of Week 3 of Las Cruces Area High School Football

All Las Cruces area football teams were in action Friday and Saturday. Here is a recap of all the games, along with additional information on each team’s state and district rankings:

34 Las Cruces, 21 Rio Rancho

Las Cruces (2-1) got back on track last Friday with a 34-21 road win over Rio Rancho (2-1). Junior running back Daniel Amaro scored three touchdowns for the Bulldawgs after they trailed 6-0 in the first quarter, including a 75-yard punt return in the fourth quarter. Junior quarterback Gunnar Guardiola also threw a touchdown pass when he found senior wide receiver Nate Libby from six yards out in the second quarter.

Mayfield 30, Organ Mountain 20

Mayfield (1-2) picked up its first win of the season in its final non-district game, defeating Organ Mountain (0-3) last Friday at the Field of Dreams. The Trojans’ running game was crucial to their victory. Senior quarterback Luke Linnan ran for three touchdowns and senior running back Anthony Nevarez added another. The Knights outscored Mayfield 20-14 in the second half, but couldn’t overcome a 16-0 halftime deficit.

Centenarian 70, Artesia 39

Centennial (3-0) asserted itself as the best team in New Mexico with a clear win over defending 5A state champion Artesia (1-2) last Saturday. The Hawks scored 35 points in each half and managed 577 rushing yards. Senior quarterback Zaiden Davis led the way with 352 rushing yards and six touchdowns, while senior wide receiver Rudy Rios contributed 160 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
