Oregon High School Football Rankings: Top 25 Teams – September 12

With another set of Oregon high school football games for the 2024 season taking place tomorrow, eight teams are trading places in the Sept. 12 Oregon On3 Massey Ratings Top 25 list. While there were no significant drop-offs, Lake Oswego, Jesuit, Sprague and West Salem all dropped slightly. Here’s how the high school football teams in the Beaver State fared in the rankings.

The On3 Massey Reviewsofficially used during the BCS era, is a model that evaluates sports teams by analyzing game results, playing strength, and win margin.

The Lions secured top spot on offense and defense after defeating the Eagle Mustangs 51-14. Cornerback Josiah Molden and tight end Baron Naone were instrumental in a solid start to the season. From here, Massey Ratings predict easy wins for West Linn against Sherwood (Sept. 13), Sumner (Sept. 20) and Skyview (Sept. 27).

Last year, the Rams went undefeated and won the Oregon high school football state championship in Class 6-A. They’re picking up where they left off with convincing wins over Leilehua (35-15) and the Central Catholic Raiders of California (45-29). Unless they collapse, their next opponents (Sam Barlow, Clackamas, Gresham) should have little resistance to the Rams’ onslaught.

The Timberwolves opened the season with a 54-19 win over the Jesuit Crusaders. Zhaiel Smith was sensational in this game, starting with his 97-yard touchdown return on the first kickoff. He then caught two more touchdown passes from Nolan Keeney for a total of 107 yards. Meanwhile, Keeney had a third touchdown pass, a screen to Cole Hachmeister that covered 33 yards. Keeney finished the game with five touchdown passes, while Smith had 143 yards receiving. Tualatin will take on South Salem with its offensive power on September 13.

Running back Mana Tuioti had 82 rushing yards and a touchdown, while senior wide receiver Rocco Graziano had three catches for 78 yards and two touchdowns. Graziano added five point-afters and two field goals without missing a single attempt. Sheldon will try his luck at getting his second win when they face West Salem on Sept. 13.

The Lakers accomplished their mission in their first two outings of 2024. After defeating South Medford (33-7), Lake Oswego offered the Sunset Apollos a one-sided affair, 48-13. The Lakers totaled 295 yards on offense against Sunset, including 236 rushing yards. LaMarcus Bell was the Lakers’ best player with six carries for 104 yards and a touchdown. The Apollos, on the other hand, could only manage 90 net yards. This fifth-ranked team is looking for a 3-0 record against Silverton on September 13.

The Bowmen were on track in their 2024 season opener, winning 42-7 against the Roosevelt Roughriders. Sherwood gained 222 yards on the ground, led by Andrew Waletich’s 107 rushing yards and a touchdown. Wilson Medina had 87 yards from the faceoff line (45 receiving yards) and three touchdowns (two rushing yards), while Layton Walter and Mace Tingey each scored a rushing touchdown. Following this win, Sherwood’s schedule will become more challenging as they face top-ranked West Linn on September 13 and third-ranked Tualatin a week later.

The Pacers earned the fifth-best defense in Oregon high school football after limiting the Jefferson Democrats to two points. Quarterback Drew Weiler threw four touchdowns, two of which were caught by Zyon Floyd. Weiler’s other scoring passes went to receivers Marcus Post and Jayden Tragesser. Running back Ansu Sanoe, meanwhile, added 12 carries for 89 yards and two touchdowns. Tragesser also recorded a sack while Shanko Kornachuk threw an interception. Lakeridge will face Sam Barlow and Lakeridge in its next two games.

The Foxes defied Massey Ratings predictions when they beat Summit in their season opener. More importantly, they proved the win was no fluke after defeating Mountainside 24-21. Silverton finished the game with 288 yards of offense, including 162 rushing yards and six third-down conversions on 11 attempts. Silverton will put its unblemished record on the line on Sept. 13 against fifth-ranked Lake Oswego.

Previous: No. 8 (-1)
The Crusaders are the only team in the top ten of Oregon high school football with a losing record, but they are included because they lost to third-ranked Tualatin. Although they gained 241 yards on offense against the Timberwolves, they failed to convert any of their four third-down attempts. Jesuit will have to do more than that effort to pull off a win over 13.th-placed Tigard on September 13th.

Back: No. 10
The Saxons opened the 2024 season with a 28-6 win over the North Salem Vikings. Wide receiver Romyl Luster was the star of the show, making 13 catches for 205 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Benjamin Hennan had two touchdown passes, while running back Noah Scharer had 62 rushing yards and two touchdowns. However, South Salem will face a real challenge when they face third-ranked Tualatin on Sept. 13.
