Man sentenced to more than 36 years in prison for death of one-year-old son at Walmart in S. Wichita

WICHITA, Kansas (KWCH) – A Wichita man charged in connection with the death of his 1-year-old son last October was sentenced to 438 months (36.5 years) in prison by a Sedgwick County judge on Friday.

Brijin McCullough, 32, was convicted of second-degree manslaughter, among other charges. McCullough and the child’s mother, Wilma Presley, were originally charged with first-degree murder in connection with the baby’s death.

Both pleaded guilty to their cases in July. According to court records, Presley was sentenced to 20 years in prison earlier this week.

The charges stem from an incident last October when emergency responders rushed to Walmart on the corner of Pawnee and Broadway for a report of an unresponsive child. Kaiden McCullough was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The autopsy report showed that the deputy medical examiner believed that one-year-old Kaiden McCullough died from the toxic effects of fentanyl. According to the report, this was not the first time drugs were found in the toddler’s system.

Additional details from the autopsy report say it’s unclear how long Kaiden was unresponsive because his mother thought he was sleeping. It also says Kaiden had been living with an aunt since testing positive for methamphetamine at birth and had only recently returned to his mother’s care.

First reports following the arrest of McCullough and Presley can be found in the video above.
