By 1987, northern New Hanover County had more homes and businesses

Fueled by a thriving neighborhood, commercial growth expanded to northern New Hanover County in the mid-1980s.

According to an article in the August 11, 1987, issue of the Wilmington Morning Star, the Murrayville Post Shopping Center planned to open four stores. Although no details about the new space were announced, the mall already housed a Food Lion, an Eckerd Drug Store, a western gear store, a dry cleaner and a video store.

The additional retail space was the latest in a series of developments to accompany the NorthChase development and ongoing construction of Interstate 40, which opened in 1990. A Wilsons supermarket was under construction across from the shopping center on North College Road. Lowes Foods now occupies the space.

Despite the closure of Family Dollar, the Murrayville Post Shopping Center has several other tenants such as Subway and Camino Real Mexican Restaurant, as well as a Fit 4 Life gym. Food Lion exited the business and opened another location closer to NorthChase, which was later joined by a Dollar Tree, Burger King and Domino’s.

And commercial growth continues. McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Dunkin’, Dollar General and a state employee credit union, as well as the Murrayville Station business park, are located on North College Road. Several manufacturing companies are located within sight of I-40.
