Matthijs de Ligt makes fun of Man United’s transfer motivation in the Bundesliga

Matthijs de Ligt makes fun of Man United’s transfer motivation in the Bundesliga

Matthijs de Ligt has explained the reasons behind his decision to join Premier League giants Manchester United this summer.

The Dutch star moved from Munich to Manchester in August after the Red Devils signed the 25-year-old for £38 million ($50 million).

The move to United is considered crucial for De Ligt as it is the third mega-transfer of his career, having moved from Ajax to Juventus before joining Bayern Munich in 2022.

De Ligt made his first EPL appearance for United in the 3-0 loss to Liverpool before the international break and is now trying to establish himself in Erik ten Hag’s team.

The pair had previously worked together at Ajax and De Ligt admitted that the “Ten Hag factor” played a role in his decision to join the club, but was not his main motivator.

“I have already settled in Manchester and am enjoying myself. The guys are great, everything has been handled perfectly. There are also a lot of Dutch people in the team,” he said in an interview with Dutch broadcaster Vandaag Inside.

“Also because I stay in the picture (for the national team). The Premier League has more spectators, the Bundesliga fewer.

“Erik ten Hag is not the only reason I joined United. We are talking about Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in the world. The pressure is high because the fans are used to things from the past. It is up to us to be as good as we can be.”

De Ligt’s comments will be music to the ears of United fans as they prepare for their return to the EPL after winning each of their first three games of the season, away to winless Southampton on September 14.
