Florida State will pay $1.3 million to play Saturday at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee against Memphis, the former school of Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell.

Norvell spent four seasons in Memphis, compiling a 38-16 record. In December 2019, he was hired by Florida State, where he succeeded the fired Willie Taggert after leading the Tigers to four consecutive postseason appearances, including the Cotton Bowl.

The contract with Memphis was signed six months after Norvell was hired and the $1.3 million payment must be made no later than February 15, 2025.

Mike Norvell severance package

Florida State, which lost its first two games this season, has invested in Norvell for now. His firing would currently mean the school would have to pay him $65 million if he were not coaching, or 85% of his base salary and additional payments for the remainder of his contract, which expires on Dec. 31, 2031.

This amount would be contingent on Norvell’s obligation to find alternative employment, with the income from that position offsetting FSU’s debt to him.
