Kentucky leads 6-3 at halftime against No. 1 Georgia

So, so, so…Where was that Kentucky team last week?

At halftime against first-placed Georgia the Wildcats lead – yes, lead – the Bulldogs by a low score of 6-3 at Kroger Field in Lexington. After being embarrassed by South Carolina last weekend, Mark StoopsThe team received an injection of energy and is giving the Bulldogs, who have not lost a regular season game since 2020, a real fight.

As the score shows, the first two quarters were a tough battle on defense. Georgia and Kentucky combined to punt 12 times. The Bulldogs managed just 65 total yards on offense (the fewest in a Bulldogs first half since 2009) compared to 130 yards for the Wildcats. UK recorded 12 first downs while Georgia managed just three, but the ‘Cats just couldn’t find the end zone.

quarterback Brock Vandagriffwho caused a fumble before halftime, looked much better than last week, throwing for 59 yards on 9 of 14 passes, but the offense as a whole struggled to move the chains consistently against a strong Georgia defense. Demie Sumo-Karngbaye ran 56 yards on 13 attempts to keep Georgia’s defense on its toes.

Georgia running back Trevor Etienne, who suffered a shoulder injury in the first half, was declared “out for now” by head coach Kirby Smart as his team headed to the halftime locker room.

Kentucky Kickers Alex Raynor is the only player to have points on the scoreboard for the ‘Cats. The senior sank a 55-yard kick late in the first quarter, the longest field goal in team history, before sinking a 32-yard kick seconds before the end of the half. Georgia kicker Peyton Woodring got the Bulldogs on the scoreboard in the second quarter with a 34-yard kick.

To say this result was unexpected would be an understatement. Kentucky was a three-touchdown underdog before kickoff. Let’s see if UK can repeat the same thing for another 30 minutes.
