Fire alarm sounds after Florida State’s game against Memphis

Fire alarm sounds after Florida State’s game against Memphis

Florida State’s recovery from last season’s playoff loss and historic loss to Georgia in the Orange Bowl has gotten off to an equally poor start.

Just one year removed from an undefeated season and in contention for the playoffs, the Seminoles are off to an 0-3 start following a 20-12 loss to FBS Memphis on Saturday. Florida State paid Memphis $1.3 million to have it on its schedule as a buyout game this year and still lost.

After the game, Florida States head coach Mike Norvell had to cut his postgame press conference short because a fire alarm went off in the team complex.

The fire alarm spared the head coach from having to explain the grueling details of his team’s catastrophic defeat.

“We all have to do a better job,” Norvell said during his postgame press conference. “…We can’t keep coming into games and seeing things that absolutely don’t suit us. So we all have to prepare better…These guys haven’t stopped working.”

Florida State is now winless since being eliminated from the College Football Playoffs last year after four straight losses.

Florida State started the season with a heartbreaking 24-21 loss to Georgia Tech in Dublin, Ireland, a week before the rest of the college football schedule began. Things got even worse on Sept. 2, when they fell to 0-2 with a 28-13 loss to Boston College.

“I’m just upset with the way the season started,” Norvell said after the loss to Boston College. “We weren’t able to perform at any point. I obviously didn’t put them in a position to show what I think of this football team and that’s extremely disappointing. I apologize to our fans, I apologize to everyone associated with the program — I mean, it was extremely disappointing that we weren’t better.”

But the Seminoles suffered their first two losses against opponents whose performances were more justified.

But Saturday’s loss, which came immediately after the team’s week off, was all the more unexpected given that the team was a 6.5-point favorite.

The Seminoles will not have the luxury of playing against additional opponents they paid to play in the near future.

Their next three games are all against ACC rivals, starting next Saturday against Cal, then they’ll travel to new conference opponent SMU, both newcomers to the conference. In the game after that, Florida State will face longtime conference rival Clemson, who are trying to overcome their own early-season adversities after a crushing loss to Georgia in Week 1.
